How to Upgrade Laptop Processor?

| |

Even humans want to move to the next level. No one loves to stay outdated. Your laptop is not excluded from upgrades too. Maybe you are tired of the processor performing slowly, and you need an upgrade.

The first thing to note is that your processor is compatible with your laptop. Also, some laptops do not support upgrading your processor because of its direct solder on the motherboard.

Take note that most of the time if your laptop is slim and compact, upgrading is most likely impossible. You have to be sure that your processor is listed in the manual for service and tested by some users with your very own model. Here are the steps for an upgrade:

  1. Upgrade the BIOS. It is very crucial in this process even before you get to the internals. Your system must be up to date in its BIOS. It is expedient because if you upgrade your processor and your BIOS are outdated, or it is more than what your BIOS can handle, your system would not even boot. Check your manufacturer’s website, go to its support section, and check out the latest BIOS version.
  2. Now remove the battery and battery card. If your laptop has an inbuilt battery, you can do that later on. You need much more caution if your battery is inbuilt. A single screw falling out can be dangerous to the whole system.
  3. Remove the back cover carefully. Since you have disconnected both internal and external sources of power, you can now remove screws and remove covers. In some cases, removing the back covers is not enough; you have to disassemble the keyboard too. To see the processor, you can check your manual or browse for steps to take to get to the processor of your laptop.
  4. The next thing to do is to remove the keyboard. Let us believe that you have taken off all screws and this should have removed the keyboard and wireless adapter. Remove the ribbon cable with extra care and take out your keyboard. It might not be easy for all laptops, so take your time. Also, take note of the position of every screw so that you would not have problems when assembling.
  5. Take out the upper shell and display assembly. There might be screws beneath the removed keyboard, take them out. Also, you might see some connector and ribbon, remove them. Unscrew hinges, and the video should be unplugged. Set aside the Wi-Fi antenna cables and the whole of the display assembly.
  6. Remove the Heatsink. At this point, you can see everything on your motherboard. Remove the heatsink screws and get to the processor. If you cannot see the processor yet, you might have to take off the whole motherboard. Always be careful through every one of the steps you take. The internal part of your system is delicate.
  7. Then, replace the CPU. Turn the CPU screw anticlockwise until it cannot move again. Gently lift the processor, remove it from its socket, and set aside. Carefully put in the new CPU, and it should fit correctly if it is well fixed. After doing the placement successfully, turn the screw clockwise.
  8. Finally, apply the thermal paste and reassemble your system. Use 99% alcohol cleaner to clean up and remove all old thermal paste. After this, apply a thin layer of thermal paste on the CPU and spread it in proportion. Put back the heat sink and put your laptop back together.

In conclusion, after reassembling, turn your computer on. Check if your laptop can see the CPU rightly in your BIOS. Launch Windows and your system begin to perform higher because of the upgrade.
